Thursday, November 6 |GISS Announcements

'Uy' Netulh|Good Morning,

To begin our day in a good way, let us take a moment to show gratitude for the Hul'q'umi'num and SECOTEN speaking peoples. Acknowledging that the Gulf Islands, on the territory of the Coast Salish People, is the place we have come to call home. Where we get to enjoy all the beautiful things that make up the water and the land. May we continue walking our path of reconciliation through education, awareness, and advocacy

Good Luck to the Sr Girls volleyball this weekend as they travel to Timberline to play at the north island championships! You can check GISS athletics Instagram for updates on how the team is doing!

This year November 8th falls on Saturday and so we can easily miss the significance of is this day, which is designated to show gratitude for the contributions and sacrifices made by thousands of Indigenous men and women who volunteered for each of Canada's War Efforts. Why is having this day necessary? Due to the discriminatory practices of the government and Canadian society at the time, Indigenous veterans were denied recognition and benefits given to othersIn fact, enfranchisement caused them to lose their identity. The truth about their treatment is now well-understood, so, as another act of Reconciliation, on Saturday we are asked to acknowledge and honour our Indigenous Veterans.
