Year-End Message from Jill Jensen, Superintendent of Schools

To our learning community,

June is a time of reflection and as we come to the end of the school year, I am thinking about the many enriched learning opportunities that have been available to our students, and the dedicated staff throughout the district who have made these opportunities possible.

As a learning team, we have intentionally worked to model the deep learning that we aspire to see in our education system through thoughtful reflection and by cultivating the freedom to explore new ideas, take risks, and challenge the status quo. Our educators and staff have been diligent in providing quality instruction and programs that meet the needs of every learner in the district. I have witnessed the curiosity that is essential for deep learning and transformative growth, creating space for every learner to flourish. Three questions have framed our reflections: What have I learned? Why is it important? What are my next steps? As we have asked these questions, we have repeatedly been humbled by the remarkable insight, intelligence, and creativity expressed by our learners.

I am grateful for the meaningful relationships we have in our district – this cannot be overstated. I observe individuals consistently fostering safe, welcoming, and supportive learning environments that are both inclusive and accessible. I see staff, students, families, and partners interacting with kindness, care, love, and compassion. This contributes to fostering environments where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Our individual choices shape our collective climate and culture. Thank you for choosing to show up in a good way each day.

Our district has been focused this year on building relationships with local Rightsholders through the establishment of an Indigenous Education Council. In doing so, we recognize how much we must learn about the truths of our history in this place (colonially known as the Southern Gulf Islands, British Columbia, and Canada). I hope as we continue with a commitment to deepening our learning and understanding, that we will grow our capacity to do more, demonstrating through our words and actions every single day that we are making reparations, and centering Indigenous knowledges and worldviews, and uplifting local language, culture, and history.

In closing, I want to extend congratulations to our graduating students, the class of 2025, and my deep gratitude to all our students. We would not be here without you. You make a difference. Each one of you is amazing! Thank you for being you!

Wishing you all a peaceful, joyful, and rejuvenating summer!

Yours in learning and with gratitude,

Jill Jensen
