Unofficial Summary of the Public Board Meeting, held June 11, 2025
The Board of Education
Meeting Broadcasting | To address technical challenges experienced this past year, a dedicated facilitator will be assigned to manage Public Board meetings and use broadcasting software to stream the meetings directly to YouTube Live for public viewing access.
Minister of Education and Child Care | The Board and senior staff met with Minister Beare via teams. This meeting provided an opportunity to advocate for district needs, specifically around funding and transportation. It was made clear that no additional funding will be available for the upcoming year.
District Updates
Indigenous Education Council | The District will meet with rights holders on June 27 to formalize the Indigenous Education Council, appoint a Chair and Vice Chair, and finalize the Terms of Reference.
Strategic Direction | Superintendent Jensen highlighted place-based outdoor learning initiatives across the District, noting the GISS Environmental Science class was featured in BC's Teacher magazine. Twelve members of the 2024 graduating class were recognized earlier this month for completing the Youth Work in Trades program.
School Fees | The approved 2025/2026 Schedule of School Fees is now available on the district website.
Finances and Budget
Monthly Financial Report | The monthly operating expense report shows that expenses are currently 0.91% under the amended budget. The received second and third readings and was adopted.
Facilities Planning | A draft for the district was presented. The Board approved the Five-Year Capital Plan – Major Submission, focused on school seismic mitigation.
Policy Committee
Approved Policies | The following Policies were adopted/approved and will be available on the website:
Policy 5.12 Annual Budget (replaces Policy 605)
Policy 5.20 Student Fees and Financial Hardship (replaces Policies 6700 & 6750)
Policy 5.30 Reimbursement of Expenses (replaces Policy 6500)
Policy 5.40 Donations and Gifts (replaces Policy 630)
Policy 5.60 School Closure (replaces Policy 635)
Policy 1.22 Trustee Remuneration
Repealed | The following policies and procedures have been repealed in favor of Administrative Practices: 410 Student Transportation, 615 Disposal of Equipment, 6200 Purchasing and Tendering, 6300 Retention of Records, 6450 School Generated Funds, 6750 School Fees, 6850 Public Use of School Facilities, 6900 Outdoor Play Areas, and 203 Property Control.
Notice of Motion | Draft policy 2.60 Employee Conflict of Interest will be posted on the district website, circulated for feedback, and will be considered for adoption at the Sept.10, 2025, meeting in public.
The proposed motion to limit boarding allowance for the 2025/2026 school year and cease the practice for the 2026/2027 school year was defeated. Through newly adopted policy 5.20 Student Fees and Financial Hardship, the Board has committed to supporting students with financial need to access their educational programs. Operationalizing the policy becomes the responsibility of staff.
